Biography

James Flaxman was born in Sydney, Australia in 1978. From an early age he showed a strong interest in all things strange and macabre. His parents split in 1992; despite high grades in English and Art, he left school shortly afterwards, finding employment as a gas station attendant, night filler, set constructor and factory hand. While the money he earned gave him a measure of financial freedom, his long working hours and oppressive environment sapped his creativity. In 1998 he grew so disillusioned with art he burned his whole portfolio.

By 2001 his fortunes had improved and he began to draw again. His work attracted interest from underground publishers and gallery owners. Being his own harshest critic, he continued to experiment with styles and materials. His most recent work is done in airbrush or digitally enhanced media.

James has staged five exhibitions at the time of writing, four of which were profitable. His work ranges from hastily drawn cartoons to large canvasses that take months to complete. The themes he explores are just as diverse; while many of his ink sketches are little more than visual jokes, his more ambitious works deal with issues that affect us all. He is particularly concerned about the resurgence of politicised religion, a force that has killed millions worldwide and continues to claim lives today.

While never short of inspiration, James constantly aims to improve his technique. He hopes this site will bring his work to a wider audience.
